DESCRIPTION: Wing length up to 11.5mm.  Belonging to the tribe Bacchini this smart hoverfly is identified by the black scutellum, the pair of round spots on tergite 2, and the spots on tergites 3 and 4 that are flush with the front margins. In the males these latter spots are large, hemispherical and partially fused whereas in the female they are square and separated. The stigma of this species is noticeably long.  BEHAVIOUR: The larvae can be found on a variety of bushes where they predate the larvae of various moths. Adults have a liking for umbellifers.  DISTRIBUTION: Widespread throughout southern Britain with the occasional records as far north as Scotland HABITAT: Meadows, scrub, and woodland edges. PERIOD: March to October is the time to see this species with peak months during July to September.
